FIVE TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR PHILLY PIPES FROM FREEZING

1. Insulate pipes. Pipes that run through a crawl space, attic, or garage are especially vulnerable to freezing. You can buy inexpensive pipe insulation at most hardware or department stores.
2. Let faucets trickle. If the temperature is expected to dip into the 20s or below, especially for an extended period, run a trickle of water from a faucet. Even a tiny flow of water can help prevent pipes from freezing.
3. Open cabinet doors. By opening the cabinet doors below kitchen and bathroom sinks, it will let warm air circulate around pipes. Every bit of heat can help prevent disaster.
4. Keep your house warm. During a cold snap, resist the urge to turn down your thermostat while sleeping or away from your house. It’s worth the extra heating cost to prevent burst pipes.
5. Make sure your home is well insulated. Check to ensure your garage, attic, crawlspaces or other spaces exposed to cold weather have adequate insulation.
