But wait. Before you pick up the phone for a pricey service call, make sure the problem isn’t something you can fix on your own. The only thing worse than malfunctioning air conditioning in summer is finding out you called a technician over something as simple as a tripped breaker.

1) CHECK THE THERMOSTAT

If your air conditioner isn’t coming on, check to see if the thermostat is working. The fix may be as simple as replacing its batteries.

2) CHECK YOUR BREAKERS

Is your HVAC unit getting power? Make sure the power switches on the indoor unit are on. Next, check your breaker box to see if any circuit breakers are tripped. If so, switch them off and on again, then wait 15 minutes to see if the unit starts. If on the breakers trip again, call for an inspection ASAP, because this could indicate other problems.

3) CHECK THE AIRFLOW

If your air conditioner is running but your house isn’t getting enough cool air, it could be that something is inhibiting proper flow of air through the system. Is your intake filter dirty? It should be changed at least once a quarter. Is there debris or vegetation blocking airflow to the outdoor unit? Check your ductwork to make sure it’s not damaged, kinked or disconnected.

4) CHECK THE DOORS

Your HVAC unit might have a safety switch that cuts power if the door panels on the indoor unit aren’t closed.
